How does the eID readout process work with the Notary App?
The readout process for German identity documents is carried out via your smartphone and works - similar to contactless payment in retail - with NFC technology.
To read out the eID data, the identity card must be held up to the point on the smartphone where the NFC chip is located: This is usually the upper area on the back of the smartphone. If this does not work, you can find the NFC position of all common smartphones on the website of the AusweisApp.
If the readout process fails, this is usually because the connection between the identity card and smartphone has been interrupted. To avoid this, proceed as follows:
- Place the identity card on a firm surface (table).
- Then place your smartphone on the identity card so that the NFC interface is touching the card (i.e. with the display facing upwards).
- Then start the readout process again and do not move the smartphone while entering the eID PIN.
Your identity card must be valid and authorised for use of the online ID function (the so-called "eID"). In addition, the online ID function must not be blocked. Blocking occurs, for example, if you repeatedly enter the wrong PIN. If you have blocked the online ID function due to repeatedly entering the wrong PIN, you can reactivate it by entering the PUK or alternatively by applying for a new eID PIN at your local citizens' office. You will find the PUK in the initial PIN letter that was sent to you when your identity card was issued. You can find out more here.
