What should I do if my eID is blocked?
If you enter the wrong PIN three times, the online function of your identity card will be blocked for security reasons. There are two ways to reactivate the identity card.
1. Enter the PUK via the AusweisApp
You are in possession of the so-called PUK number. You will find this in the initial PIN letter from the authority, which also contains your transport PIN.
- Download the "AusweisApp" from the app store and start the app.
- Click on the "Change PIN" section.
- Select "6-digit PIN".
- Then place your smartphone on the identity card so that the NFC interface is touching the card (i.e. with the display facing upwards).
- Enter the ten-digit unlocking number (PUK) in the input field. You can also find instructions here.
2. Apply for a new eID PIN
If you do not have the PUK, you will need to have your identity card reset. You can obtain a new eID PIN for your online ID card directly from your local citizens' office. Please remember to take your identity card with you to this appointment.
The PIN reset letter, which you could use to order a new eID PIN by post to your home address, has unfortunately been suspended due to the current budget situation. We will inform you as soon as an alternative is available again.
