Which foreign identity documents can I use for identification via eID?

The legislator has decided that identification using a foreign eID in the context of online procedures is only possible if they obtained the "high" level of assurance in accordance with the European eIDAS Regulation. Therefore, the means of identification of the following EU and EEA member states are currently accepted:

  • Austria,
  • Belgium,
  • Croatia,
  • Czech Republic,
  • Denmark,
  • Estonia,
  • Italy,
  • Latvia,
  • Liechtenstein,
  • Lithuania,
  • Luxembourg,
  • Malta,
  • Netherlands,
  • Norway,
  • Poland,
  • Portugal,
  • Slovakia,
  • Spain,
  • Sweden.

As an alternative to the eID of your own country, the so-called eID card for citizens of the EU and the EEA can also be used:

All EU and EEA nationals who are at least 16 years old can apply for an eID card (also known as an 'eID card for citizens of the EU and the EEA') in Germany or at a competent German representation abroad in order to take part in a notarial online procedure. You can find more information here.
